Press Release
Judy attended the American Orff-Schulwerk Association Music and Movement Education National Conference in San Jose, California in November, 2007. She engaged in multiple workshops presented by well known educators in dance, music and drama from Africa, Spain, Brazil and Germany. Workshops included South Indian Drumming: Playful, Poetic Mathematics!, Recorder-The Art of Articulation, Creative Movement with Wolfgang Stange who works with disabled children, Children’s Clapping Games from Around the World, African Rhythm, Games and Dances and Theater Games and Improvisation. The conference offered professional development points towards MA recertification and extended Spitzberg’s training in Orff Music methodology which she achieved a Level I certification from the New England Conservatory of Music.
Orff Schulwerk methodology integrates movement and music for young children as they learn to compose music using recorders, xylophones and other percussion instruments along with children’s folk tales, poems, songs and dances. She uses this method, as one of many, in her MWJDS teaching and has already added new songs and games to the curriculum. Spitzberg incorporated one of the session ideas in an MWJDS class using the Brazilian trickster folk tale “Jabuti”, the tortoise, using a Brazilian folk melody with accompanying xylophones and flute songs. Spitzberg notes, “dance, movement, body percussion, singing, pronunciation, repetition, creation, ensemble work, joy, multicultural songs and games are all aspects of this style of music education that are essential to our whole learning and benefit children of all levels and backgrounds. It increases their self-esteem, leadership skills, reading abilities, coordination and awareness and appreciation of the arts in our environment.”
Creative Arts curriculum at MetroWest Jewish Day School includes music, art, dance and more. The MWJDS Makhela (choir), conducted by Judy Spitzberg, performed at the school’s Fall concert and at the school’s Hanukkah celebration in December, and will perform at several more engagements during the school.
MetroWest Jewish Day School is a pluralistic community which welcomes interfaith families with eager learners in grades K-6. For more information about Spitzberg’s curriculum, or MWJDS, call 508-620-5554 or visit www.mwjds.org.
